In the tradition of AnalogDog's I Love the
Stilly series that we have adopted, here is the addition of one
of our favorite places, on the South Fork of the
Stillaguamish.
This cache is a bit upstream from the first three
caches of this series. It's actually about 1.5 miles on the north
side of the town of Granite Falls. This has been one of our
favorite places to visit and a good place to stretch our legs
during the drive out after a day of geocaching up the Mountain Loop
Highway.
The Granite Falls Fishway was built in 1954 and consists of a 580'
fishway connecting the top and bottom parts of river on either side
of the falls via a 240' tunnel, allowing salmon to swim past the
falls to spawn upstream.
We love visiting the fishway just about any time of the year. We're
especially fond of being there during times of high water. Such an
amazing amount of water passes over these falls then that it
sometimes fills the fish ladder with so much water that it comes
out the grates at the top. You can get some idea of how much water
is flowing down the river by visiting
USGS Real-Time Water Data for USGS 12161000 SF Stillaguamish River
near Granite Falls, WA. Sometimes there are technical rock
climbers on the cliffs across the river. Several nylon anchors are
visible around some of the trees near the top.
About the cache:
- This microcache is located in a logical place within sight of
the fishway. It should be a simple find.
- It is easily reachable from already established roads, trails
or paths. No digging or decimation of plants is needed.
- Muggles do frequent the area, particularly when the weather is
nice, so keep an eye out for them.
- The log is now waterproof paper and shouldn't dissolve into a
ball of mush when it gets wet.
- Bring a writing instrument because the cache doesn't have
one.
- Congratulations to Gordy&Sassy for their
FTF! They won an unactivated set of travel bug tags!
As always, please let me know if there is a problem with the cache,
and have fun!
