Geocache Description:

This Cache was hidden with friends to replace 'Cape Cache'
(by Wanderers and Friends) which was hidden nearby, but went missing in June 2002. This one is a little harder to find, in the hope that it will not be stumbled upon and plundered.

A little local history worth a visit:
Since August 1848 the 'Otway Lighthouse' has been the main beacon for the north- western approach to Bass Strait. Over the years, the Lighthouse has seen many inventions that have changed dramatically the way in which it operates. Initially Whale Oil then Kerosene, Telegraph, Diesel generators, Electricity, Radio and Global Positioning Satellites have all had their impact. Finally in 1994 the introduction of satellite navigation systems caused the 'old light' to be turned off and replaced with a small solar powered beacon. The new system, whilst being efficient and requiring little maintenance, holds little of the romance and charm of the beautiful sandstone tower built nearly 150 years ago.
