We finally got around to making the hike to see the Wasilik Memorial Poplar, the 2nd largest Poplar in the U.S. The trail was one of the most beautiful we have taken! MtnKitty said it was like being in wildflower heaven.
The cache is a small lock 'n lock placed at a point of interest before reaching the Wasilik Poplar tree. It is at a great place to stop, rest, and just take in the beauty of the surroundings.
NOTE: POOR GPS RECEPTION WILL PROBABLY POINT UPHILL FROM THE TRAIL. YOU DO NOT NEED TO LEAVE THE TRAIL TO RETRIEVE THE CACHE.
Once refreshed and successful at finding the cache, we encourage you to continue on to the Wasilik Poplar. It has died of old age, but is still absolutely incredible!
Once there, you will be only a short distance from another cache - the first stage of The Riley Knob (GCVR6R).
Parking is available where the AT meets the road to Standing Indian (see coordinates). From the parking area, the unmarked trail is straight ahead, slightly to the left, and generally downhill.
Round trip to this cache is a little under a mile, with some significant but gradual grade change. Round trip to the Wasilik Poplar is around 1.5 miles.
Small note: As required by the USFS for caches hidden in the Nantahala National Forest, the cache is prominently labeled as a geocache and the label includes the waypoint number and the owner's e-mail address.
