[ENG] Ben Amera - The coordinates lead you near one of Mauritania's most breathtaking places, the Ben Amera monolith. You really can't miss it, the enormous mass of dark rock rises up to 633m, and together with the sand dunes surrounding it, creates a beautiful view of the Saharan landscape. Ben Amera is the biggest monolith in Africa, and in fact the third biggest in the world, after Uluru and Mount Augustus located in Australia.
To get to the place you need to have a 4WD, unless you want to have a nice, few kilometers walk through the desert.

Ben Amera est le plus grand monolithe en Afrique, et en fait le troisième plus grand au monde, après Uluru et le mont Augustus situés en Australie. [ENG] What is a monolith?
Monoliths are basically geological features consisting of a single massive stone or rock. Volcanic or other processes may give rise to a body of rock resistant to erosion, inside a body of softer rock such as limestone, which is more susceptible to erosion. When the less resistant rock is eroded away to form a plain, the more resistant rock is left behind as an isolated mountain. The presence of a monolith typically indicates the existence of a nearby plateau or highland, or their remnants. This is especially the case for monoliths composed of sedimentary rock, which will display the same stratigraphic units as this nearby plateau. Monoliths are as well known as inselbergs (island-mountains) or monadnocks.

Des processus volcaniques ou autres peuvent donner naissance à une roche résistante à l'érosion, à l'intérieur d'un bloc de roches plus tendres comme le calcaire, plus sensible à l'érosion. Lorsque la roche la moins résistante est érodée pour former une plaine, la roche la plus résistante est laissée comme une montagne isolée. La présence d'un monolithe indique généralement l'existence d'un plateau ou d'une montagne à proximité, ou de leurs restes. C'est particulièrement le cas pour les monolithes composés de roches sédimentaires, qui présenteront les mêmes unités stratigraphiques que ce plateau voisin.
