Geocache Description:

Short easy walk through the woods from a well-known local landmark in the beautiful South Central Adirondacks. Please take care to replace properly and make sure the 'camouflage' is replaced. An experienced cacher will have little trouble spotting this cache. Please help keep it hidden from others .

If you drive from the south, you can't miss the pig. You can kiss the pig, or not, as you choose.

Please note: Be careful about parking on the shoulder of the highway. You may get a ticket for being a traffic hazard. There is a dirt road just to the north which is much safer. If you have multiple or big vehicles, there is also an informal parking area to the south, but it will be a little longer walk. Neither of these spots may be plowed in the winter.

(Update March 2016)

The area was logged in 2013 and for a while the woods were fairly open. But by 2016 the increase in sunlight led to growth of sticker bushes and other troublesome brush, increasing the terrain difficulty. The cache was hidden under the exposed roots of a small birch tree, but the tree decayed and collapsed. It completely covered the cache and there was not much identifiable birch tree left even on the ground. It took me over a half hour of meticulous grid searching to find the remains of the tree. I doubt any but the most observant and dedicated geocacher would have found the cache. It was probably a 5/3 instead of a 2/2.

The cache has been moved to an easier location more consistent with the original rating. It is closer to the pig and easier to get to. I don't think it is any easier or harder for a geocacher to spot then when the birch tree was intact, just different, but since it is closer to the pig and road I am a bit concerned that an observant muggle taking a stroll in the woods might spot it.

With the change in placement I am marking it as winter accessible, although really deep snow will cover it and parking might be a problem. It should be accessible by snowmobile if you don't mind some boondock riding along the snowbanks from the S41 trail.

I hope you enjoy finding this cache. There are many other caches in the Speculator - Lake Pleasant - Piseco area. You can find a map of local hiking trails and other attractions by visiting the Chamber of Commerce office at Speculator in the "Lane Emporium.".

If you are an amateur radio operator, give a call on the Speculator repeater (147.165). There are several local geocachers who are hams.
