Geocache Description:

Backbone trail from Malibu Canyon Road

This cache was placed without a log, pencil, or container. But now, thanks to "Sr. Hikers," Ingrid and Wolf, we now have a log, pencil, and a container that is a miniature galvanized trash can.

Thank you Sr. Hikers for your contribution to this cache; thanks for visiting and helping out!!

This peak was my attempt to have a good view of the 8 channel islands on a day which had 75 mile visibility. I was successful in seeing the southern 4. The mountains near Point Dume blocked my view of the northern 4.

If you visit this location on an extremely clear day, as I did, you will have a view of much of south bay's coastline from Palos Verdes to Playa Del Rey. You will be able to see Catalina Island in its entirety. Just beyond the west (right) end of Catalina you'll see part of San Clemente Island. Well to the right of that you will see Santa Barbara Island. About half way between Santa Barbara Is. and the mountain range that you are standing upon (to the right of S.B. Is.), you may see San Nicholas Island, some 70 miles away from you! (The closest part of both San Clemente and San Nicholas are both over 70 miles from the cache.)

Instructions:

Park at a small parking lot on West side of Las Virgenes Canyon Road that is located just south of Tapia Park. Parking lot coordiates: N34° 04.784, W118° 42.218
Be prepared with at least one quart of water, sunblock, and appropriate clothing for a 7 mile round trip hike that has an 1800' elevation change! I saw one dead baby rattlesnake (more deadly than an adult) on the way up, three mule deer on the way back down, at dusk.

Find the equestrian trail and take the uphill trail that heads Southwest. After hiking 1/2 mile you will intersect a road where you will turn left. A right turn here will lead you to a locked gate at a Juvinal Detention Facility.

Hike another 1.7 miles to a small, steep trail that forks to the right. This fork should be close to the following coordiantes and is marked with some stacked stones.
N34° 04.054, W118° 43.255

After a very steep climb of just about 100 feet, you will again be on a good walking trail. Follow this trail for about a mile until you get to:
N34° 04.718, W118° 43.940 and climb the steep hill on your left.

Now you are there. Enjoy the view!
