Puceul, serait la traduction de petit puits en latin. La paroisse existe dès le XIIème siècle, et se serait constituée près d'une source renommée. Au Ier siècle, l'ancien culte druidique est christianisé sous le vocable de Saint-Clair Ier évêque de Nantes. En venant boire à la fontaine, il aurait laissé au coeur de la pierre, l'empreinte du sabot de son cheval.
La fontaine Saint-Clair que l'on peut voir aujourd'hui date du XIXème siècle, elle est située à La Bourdinière. Dans le jardin d'herbes médicinales, proches de la source sacrée, on retrouve la mémoire des plantes de légende et l'énergie des cultes anciens.
Les processions persistent jusqu'en 1980 environ, on vient s'y laver les yeux et le visage, on y amène aussi les enfants qui présentent un retard à marcher. A l'automne une semaine après la Saint-Clair a lieu la bénédiction des semences de blé. Pour l'Assomption, le 15 Août et à l'occasion des communions solennelles, la statue de la Vierge est portée en procession : les villageois partent de l'église Saint-Martin précédés des croix et des bannières. Avant le retour à l'église, le prêtre prononce son homélie du haut du monticule surplombant la fontaine. Aujourd'hui les processions ont disparu. Toutefois certains souhaitent renouer avec la Tradition et offrent une fleur à la Fontaine.
