Fermo sorge sulla vetta e lungo le pendici del Colle Sàbulo (319 m s.l.m.), così denominato probabilmente perché di formazione prevalentemente arenacea (in latino sàbulum = sabbia). In cima vi è la Cattedrale dedicata a Santa Maria Assunta.
La città si presenta divisa in due parti: la parte storica, cresciuta attorno e sulla sommità del Colle Sàbulo, rimasta quasi intatta nei secoli con il suo splendido aspetto medioevale, e la parte nuova.
Il nome “Fermo” sembra derivare dall'aggettivo latino firmus, ossia fedele oppure dai certi confini. Altre ipotesi indicano una provenienza dall'etrusco Permu, con il significato di storto, da porre in relazione con la pianta iniziale della città.
Gli scavi archeologici hanno restituito materiale funerario risalente sino ai secoli IX-VIII a.C., appartenente alla tipologia proto-etrusca. Nel 264 a.C. Fermo fu una colonia romana e a testimonianza sono rimaste le cisterne romane.
Fermo stands on the summit and along the slopes of the Sàbulo Hill (319 a.s.l.), probably so called because of its mainly sandy formation (from the Latin sàbulum = sand). At the top there is the Cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta (Church of St. Mary of the Assumption). The city is divided into two parts: the historical part, which developed around and on the top of the Sàbulo Hill and remained almost intact over the centuries with its wonderful medieval appearance, and the new part.
The name “Fermo” seems to derive from the Latin adjective “firmus”, meaning “faithful” or “with certain borders”. Other hypotheses indicate that it derives from the Etruscan word “Permu”, meaning “crooked”, to be put in relation with the original plan of the city. Archaeological excavations have returned funerary material dating back to the IX-VIII centuries BC, belonging to the proto-Etruscan type. In 264 BC, Fermo was a Roman colony, and the Roman cisterns remain as evidence.
