Geocache Description:

This is a tribute cache to commemorate 1,000 finds for mrGreen317.

There is no cache at the posted coordinates

The cache coordinates are hidden in this short story concerning the adventures of mrGreen317

(again, there is not a cache at the posted coordinates)

mrGreen317…a man of many words. A lover of puzzles. A family man. And lastly, a good friend. (Did I mention that he really likes words?) I have come to know mrGreen317 through OddMushroom (who was first known to mrGreen317 as dshope33). They formed a friendship in the early months of their caching careers. They began caching only four months apart! One of their most memorable adventures was The Source of Canoe Creek (GC2P7HV). An after dark adventure for a lonely cache! There was zero margin for error with the two of them searching. I have also heard the story of the Mountains & Hikes final (GC5KZX6). They had found all others in the series independently (although mrGreen317 returned with OddMushroom to MST Vista (GC5KMPD)). Soon after becoming acquainted with OddMushroom myself, he recruited me to help with Allegheri’s Hell (GC3MJ5W). mrGreen317 did not demonstrate his best puzzle ability in helping with the solve, but was ready for our group outing to go into the depths of wherever it was we ended up. jax-man (who had previously done this cache) came along as well. It was one of my favorite adventures of the year…only the best of friends trudge through nine inches of freezing water the day after Christmas! But how can we talk about 1000 if we don’t talk about the beginning? mrGreen317 had heard of geocaching long before he started his own user account at geocaching.com. It was not until a web designer’s public profile led mrGreen317 to geocaching.com that he decided to look into this sport/hobby/obsession. He pecked around the site and when he made his way to the map of course he put in Altoona, Pa. In his words he “was astounded.” And so the seed was planted. He looked the following day for a hide near home and found nothing. He tried another local hide the next day. Another DNF. A few days later, he and his family vacationed in New York, six hours away. Optomistic, he decided to look for a cache near their vacation stay…and finally, a find! He was excited and wanted to share this new found joy with his father (who to this day does not have his own account on geocaching.com, but usually signs the log as “Ed”). They headed by boat to The Sweetest Thing (GC1WDRG) and enjoyed a find and a view here. MrGreen317 takes his dad caching with him as often as he can and I’m not sure who enjoys it more. There have been zero bad experiences I’ve heard about when they are on the hunt together! mrGreen317 has been a streaker for most of his caching career, as of the time this cache was published. It began so simply. Five, seven, eight. Now he is into the hundreds. He tries to be conservative with caching close to home (OddMushroom and I refer to them as his streak-savers). So, he gets around in an effort to keep up the streak without caching himself out of his home. From Shmelf (GC6XWEN) to East End Dead End (GC38JGQ) this guy gets around. You never can be sure what county mrGreen317 is going to grab a smiley in today! His love for puzzles extends to field puzzles and gadget caches. An early encounter with Arrow Head Lake (GC6N4NE) gained him his first experience with a specific kind of hide/puzzle. He had zero problems retrieving the log. None of us will ever forget our first experience with this type of cache and some of us will never learn to be prepared for them! Over the course of these first 1000 caches he has found many types of caches, even a handful of multis. In Memory of My Grandmas (GC6T1EQ) was a post-Christmas treat for him. (He must have squeezed this is between hiding OddMushroom’s gold can and going down under with us. I’m still not sure how we managed to accomplish so much in eight hours, just the three of us.) The camaraderie in the caching community is one of the best things about this hobby. mrGreen317 experienced the meeting of a CO at yard hide Inner City Harbor (GC56GTA). It is a nice feeling when you can shake hands and exchange some stories with someone who is passionate about the same things. (The other E’s were in the car and didn’t exchange words with the CO but patiently waited for about nine minutes.) mrGreen317 has come to enjoy event caches for these reasons. At the time of this cache’s publication, he has attended only six events, but I expect to see that number grow (along with all the others).

Congratulations mrGreen317! You are a great friend. I/we are so glad to have met you and continue to share in adventures and discussions with you. I (OddMushroom) am proud to have collaborated with you early on in what I am sure is to be a life long hobby and love of ours. This gold can is for you. This is only the beginning, I am sure.
