Geocache Description:

In woodlands near stream, easy walking, but fairly long uphill on the return. Cache is located at ~1836' ASL; Start point is ~2335' ASL.

The coordinates given are for a unique artifact in the middle of PA State Game Lands #61 in McKean County near Port Allegany, PA. The artifact is a standpipe for an Artesian Spring that boils up out of the ground in a field surrounded by woodlands. Originally, before the pipe was shot full of holes and corroded, the water flowed out the top and down over the sides. Now it exits near the base, but still erupts from a generally flat area instead of the usual hillside. The flow is enough to create a small stream; following this stream will lead you to the actual cache, which is about 40 meters away from the spring itself. (BTW, I have drunk from this spring with no ill effects; however, I cannot vouch for its safety. Bring your own drinking water.)

The cache is a 7.62 ammo can. It is amid an obvious cluster of trees, one being a hemlock, on the left side of downstream. Inside the cache are several unique and useful items; take one and leave something else if you wish. There was a hitchhiker named “Floppy.” Floppy is trying to get to Arizona to visit his uncle, and has moved on already.

The gamelands is off limits to motorized travel, so plan on hiking or mt biking riding to the coordinates. You can park at the gamelands parking area (41deg 48.473'W and 78deg 21.987'N) on top of Prospect Mountain reachable from Rt 6 between Smethport and Port Allegany. The “trail” starts about 20 meters WEST of the parking lot entrance and is about a 4-5 miles roundtrip on an old logging road. After going under the gate, take the downhill road at the split about 50 yards further along.

In hunting season (Nov-Dec; and early May) wear blaze orange. A new law in PA makes bike travel on gamelands illegal during certain hunting seasons. Check the game laws.

In winter, the route makes a great XC ski/snowshoe trip, though driving to the very top of Prospect by car may not be advisable. Enjoy your hike and watch for deer, turkeys, bears, and bobcats)!
