Geocache Description:

The train line from Bungendore to Captains flat was commenced in early 1938. The first train to Captains Flat arrived on the 9 October 1939.

At Captains flat they had a 70m long ash pit, 5000litre overhead water tank, a loading crane, a weighbridge, and a pair of loading chutes! Very impressive!

On 11 March 1962 the mine was closed, but the line was used to transport ore extracts from the tailings until 28 August 1968! The line was reopened between the 10th and 24th August 1969 for the filming of a movie starring Mick Jagger in the movie on Ned Kelly’s life. The line was then permanently closed, with removal of the junction points and the realignment of the track to Queanbeyan.
