In this puzzle you’re going to get your hands dirty with a QR code.  The aim is to colour in the missing blocks in the broken QR code given below, scan in your completed code and then check your answer with the link provided in order to get to the cache.  Eezi Peezi.  Have fun!

Rules and background info:

  1. This is how a typical QR looks like. NB, this is not the solution, just an example. You can read up more about these robust codes here.

    Sample QR code

  2. You will need a scanner application on your smartphone / cell phone in order to scan in the completed puzzle.  All the mobile phone platforms provide scanner apps for this purpose - download from your app store and install.

  3. The puzzle can be completed at home with the aid of the following on-line tools:
    • Google Earth
    • Google maps (streetview)
    • Flickr
    • Panoramio
    • Wikipedia

  4. There are only white (0, zero, False) and black (1, True) blocks in the code. It’s therefore closely related to the binary number system. You can use the built-in calculator on your PC (in scientific mode) to convert decimal numbers to binary numbers whenever this is required in the questions below. Unless otherwise indicated, the most significant bit (MSB) must be filled in at the left and top of horizontal and vertical blocks respectively.

  5. The external files required to complete the puzzle can be downloaded as a zip file. The incomplete puzzle is given as a jpeg as well as a scalable vector graphic (for those that want to fill in the blocks on the PC)

Ze Questions:

  1. Stellenbosch University is colloquially known as … ? (Like in … vs Ikeys). Now divide the alphabet into two sections: the first 13 letters are represented by 0 and the latter 13 letters by 1. Using this binary discriminator, write down the word as a sequence of 1's and 0's and fill in block 1.

  2. In what year was this famous church on Die Braak originally built. Note that it's NOT the year shown on the gable!! Dismiss the last digit of the year; convert to binary and fill in block 2

  3. In the center of the university campus is a huge open space (underneath which lies the J.S. Gericke library). This area is known as the …. Plain (hint: the word refers to the colour of the plain). Follow the same method as in 1 in fill in block 3

  4. Identify which of the following can be studied at Stellenbosch University.

  5. How many pillars are there at the front facade of this historical building (Hofmeyr Hall) in Church street? Convert to binary and fill in block 5

  6. The Centre of student counselling and development was founded in what year? Convert to binary

  7. True or False: Stellenbosch is an amazing, gorgeous, charming, quaint, one of a kind little town!?

  8. Open the attached .kml file in Google Earth. In the center of the screen you’ll see a very famous men’s residence Wilgenhof (aka Bekfluitjie - Afrikaans for the musical instrument the harmonica) and a word you should rather not utter aloud when passing this residence. Now draw the shape of this building in the following grid with a wall thickness of one block (this will be Input A):

The following is a mask to be applied to the shape above (this will be Input B):

The two shapes above must now be XOR’ed and the result filled into block 8. The truth table for the Boolean XOR function looks like this:

  9. (no question)

  10. At what time did mr AndreiskiLee (see Flickr Worldmap) take a picture of the famous church at the top of Church str? Round the time up to the nearest 5 minutes and add one minute; then write down as a 4-digit decimal number. Subtract this number from the year that the church was founded (it is only the second church that had been established after Jan van Riebeeck arrived on the continent, therefore making it the second oldest church in RSA today). Convert the result to binary and fill in block 10.

  11. What is the two-letter abbreviation for the famous tertiary institution in town. It’s the same abbreviation as that of the Big Brother country. Use lowercase Braille to fill the result into block 11.

  12. Now write the same abbreviation in Morse code (where ‘dot’ = One and ‘dash’ = Zero).

  13. Look at this architectural monstrosity on campus – the Engineering Faculty and former place of my tertiary education. How many floors does the building have, including the ground floor and excluding the penthouse? Use block 13 as a physical representation of the building and colour in the blocks representing each floor.

  14. Look at the Stellenbosch buildings in the composite image below. Starting in the top left corner in a clockwise direction, indicate which of the images are student residences:

    Stellenbosch student residences

  15. What is the binary equivalent of the capital first letter of the town name, according to the standard ASCII table? Fill in with the most significant bit (MSB) at the top of column 15

  16. Find the historic "Ou Kollege" (Eng: Old College) building in Church street. Add 10 to the street number and convert to binary

  17. Add the following up and convert the total to binary:
    • The name of the well known river that flows through the town refers to this number
    • How many train stations are there in Stellenbosh?
    • How many universities are located in the town?

  18. How many large gas bottles are there on the truck that is parked in lower Church street (see Google Street View)? Convert to binary
Please note that you need to confirm your answer with the GeoCheck link below in order to obtain further instructions for the retrieval of the cache (which has recently moved to a new location).

Enjoy the view over the beautiful Jonkershoek valley and please apply as much effort as you can to properly camouflage the cache again!
