Geocache Description:

A lost station on the Great Northern Railway.

On a ride on the Great Northern Railway out of Derby Friargate towards Nottingham Victoria, the first station you would have encountered was Breadsall, resplendent with it own station house and signal box. At the next stop along (West Hallam for Dale Abbey) the station building was saved and later turned into a private house and garden centre. Breadsall however, was not so lucky and the station building began to deteriorate. Later a fire made the whole building unsafe and it was subsequently demolished.

Today although the buildings and signalbox have gone, traces of the platforms remain and the site still has a railway ‘feel’ to it. The link at the top of this page is to a fading ‘now’ and ‘then’ multimedia presentation which shows just how much the site has changed over the last 50 years.

You can park at the bottom of the old railway approach road from where it is a two minute walk up to the cache. It’s well worth a stroll around the village of Breadsall if you have time.

Many thanks to John (O2J) for agreeing to me adding to his Great Northern series.
