A small lock and lock hidden along the Yorktown Taconic Trailway
Well, this past spring we found the bridge to nowhere (What Bridge?
GC1GAPF), and hid our "Sunday Stroll" (GC25CWW) while we were at
it. Then we checked out where the trail went if we headed north,
and hid our "Thursday Stroll"(GC278RQ) . But... Walkin' Ed said he
didn't think the trail went any further south than the bridge. We
begged to differ. So, Luna the Wonderdog and I set out to see how
far we could go - heading south from Shrub Oak. After walking for a
REALLY long time, we decided to place the cache and turn around.
The trail kept going. (The things I'll do to prove myself
right!)
I came home and did some research. There is not much information to
be found regarding this trail. It is called the "Yorktown Taconic
Trailway", and apparently stretches from rt. 6 to Rt 202 along the
southbound side of the Taconic Parkway. If you can figure out where
it starts at 202, you will likely have a shorter walk. If you
do.... PLEASE TELL ME! If you start in Shrub Oak, like I did, plan to
spend some time walking.
PLEASE DO NOT STOP OR WALK ON THE TACONIC PARKWAY!
Coming from Shrub Oak, A trailhead can be accessed at N 41 19.669 W
73 49.213. There is no parking there, but you can park at nearby
businesses. Alternatively, you can park at the end of Buckhorn
street, and access the trail from a small footpath there.
Congrats to Grschmid on FTF! And, might I suggest wearing a hat in
the Fall?
***UPDATE!*** Thanks to several cachers who have informed me, as
well as to the "Yorktown Walk Book" (available for purchase at the
John Hart Library) there is indeed an official entrance to the
trail from Deer Street, off Stoney Street. The official entrance at
the northern end is off Buckhorn street.
