Geocache Description:

WRW #1: Denton Road Bridge PnG

This park ‘n’ grab cache is hidden just down from a convenient roadside parking spot (at N 53 55.770 W 1 47.588) on the grassy wooded bank above the river a short distance west of the bridge.

This single carriageway prefabricated steel arch box-girder bridge with a 3-ton weight restriction (also known as the Toll bridge) was built in 1887 at a cost of £926 by Otley Conservative MP Marmaduke D'Arcy Wyvill (see here and photo) to improve communications between his house at Denton Park and the Ben Rhydding railway station.

Fabricated by the renowned Cleveland Bridge Company at Darlington (see here) which also built the Victoria Falls bridge in Zimbabwe, the Blue Nile bridge in Sudan, the Forth road bridge, and Humber bridge amongst many others - it also built the new Wembley Stadium Arch.

It weighs over 28 tons and is a copy of the railway bridge across the Tyne at Wylam. It took under 5 months to complete with the chosen design able to withstand sudden and heavy flooding, which it still does!

It was closed in December 2015 after being struck and slightly damaged by a huge tree carried down in the floods which caused the river to flow over the road-way. It was closed for a few days until the river level dropped, the tree released and the extent and nature of the damage assessed. The necessary repairs were carried out in August 2016.

See here for a short Boxing Day video of the river flowing over the bridge during the 2015 floods.

The photo below shows the bridge during the most recent floods on 9 February 2020 which not surprisingly washed the cache away!
