First in The Great Plank Road series.
Portland pioneers Daniel Lownsdale and William Chapman forsaw the need for a permanent road that would move goods and services to the west side of the Tualatin mountains. In 1851 they formed The Portland & Valley Plank Road Company whose aim was to lay ten miles of wooden planks and create what would be the first super highway in and out of Portland.
The road began at what is now 18th and Jefferson and wound west along the North side of Tanner creek (so called because there was a tanner's shop nearby what is now PGE park), through the Tualatin hills to the valley beyond.
The first ceremonial plank was laid in October (ha,ha) of 1851, and though never completely planked, the road was completed at what is now 185th and TV highway in 1856.
There are five caches in the Great Plank Road series, The City, The Canyon, The Crest, The Slope, The Valley. If you chose to do them all at once, you will get a good sense of the massive undertaking of this road.
Included in the cache is a laminated photo, please leave it in the cache. It is log only, so BYOP
For the FTF is a glass blue moth.
Congratulations to snosrfpolo and PDXJim for FTF!!
