Mielestäni hautausmaat ovat kiinnostavia paikkoja, joilla paljon
kerrottavaa kävijöille. Tämän kätkön tarkoitus onkin esitellä Turun
hautausmaata ja erityisesti sen vanhaa osaa, joka otettiin käyttöön
vuonna 1807. Reitillä on viisi pysäkkiä, joten tämän kätkön
löytäminen vie jonkin verran aikaa ja askelia. Itse kätkö ei ole
hautausmaan kivimuurin sisäpuolella.
Aloituspiste esittelee tyypiltään harvinaisen
hautamuistomerkin, valuraudasta tehdyn katkenneen puunrungon.
Mullan alla lepäilee Carl Jörgensen, tanskalainen
laivanrakennusmestari.
Seuraavaksi pistäydymme Carl Gustaf Hellmanin luona,
jonka navetasta käynnistyi Turun kaupunkia kohdannut tragedia.

4. syyskuuta 1827 illan rauha oli laskeutunut ruokakauppias
Hellmanin pihapiiriin Aninkaistenmäellä. Palvelusväki oli palannut
pelloilta, lehmät lypsetty ja kauppias itse liikematkalla
Tukholmassa.
Kristiina-rouva oli pistäytymässä pihamaallaan, ja huomasi paksun
savun nousevan navettansa katosta. Kauhistuneena hän huusi muun
talonväen paikalle, mutta yrityksistä huolimatta tulta ei saatu
sammumaan ja pian se levisi myös naapuritaloihin.
Tuli sai alkunsa ilmeisesti jonkin lähitalon savupiipusta
lennähtäneestä kipinästä, joka putosi navetan ylisten kuiviin
heiniin.
Aurajoen toisella puolella Tuomiokirkon kelloilla ryhdyttiin
soittamaan hälytystä. Joidenkin tuntien kuluttua kuitenkin myös
torni kelloineen sortui palavana alas, sillä tuuli yltyi ja
lennätti kekäleitä myös joen yli.
Turun palo oli Skandinavian suurin kaupunkipalo, jossa tuhoutui
noin 2500 rakennusta, eli ¾ silloisesta Turusta ja se vaati 17
ihmisen hengen.

Hauta nro 3 kuuluu Valde Hirvikannalle, hovioikeuden
presidentille, joka tunnettiin maltillisena suomalaisuusmiehenä.
Aate maksoi Hirvikannalle kuitenkin hänen henkensä: 24-vuotias
Bruno Forsström -fanaattinen ruotsinkielisyyden kannattaja- ampui
Hirvikannan kotiovelleen ja sen jälkeen itsensä.
Hirvikannan hautajaissaattuetta olivat seuraamassa suunnattomat
väkijoukot.

Kohteeseen 4 on haudattu juoksija Paavo Nurmi. Hän
hallitsi maailman juoksuratoja 20-luvulla, voittaen yhteensä 9
kultaista ja 3 hopeista Olympiamitalia. Lisäksi hänen nimissään on
ollut 25 maailmanennätystä.
Nurmi oli introvertti, joka ei välittänyt julkisuudesta.
Hautamuistomerkkikään ei ulkonäöllään paljasta, että sen alla lepää
suuri urheilusankari.
Viimeinen pysäkki ennen kätköä on Pro patria -muistomerkki.

Turun hautausmaalla on kaikkiaan 902 sankarihautaa. Muistomerkki
on pienen kukkulan rinteellä, jolta on surullinen näkymä pitkille
riveille sankarivainajien hautoja.

I find grave yards very interesting places with a lot to tell to a
visitor. The meaning of this cache is to present the grave yard of
Turku, and in particularl its oldest part, which has been in use
since 1807. There are five stops along the route, it will take some
time and steps to complete this cache. However, the cache itself is
not within the fence of the grave yard.
The starting point presents an unusual type of grave
memorial, a cut tree made of cast iron. Under the ground rests Carl
Jörgensen, a danish ship building master.
As the next thing we'll pop by Carl Gustaf Hellman, in whose
cow-house started a tragedy which met the town of Turku. The
coordinates are as follows:

On 4th of September, 1827, the calm evening had already settled
on the estate of grocer Hellman. Servants had returned from the
fields, cows were milked and the grocer himself was on a business
trip in Stockholm.
Lady of the house, Kristiina, was popping on the yard, when she
saw a thick smoke rising from the roof of their cow-house.
Terrified she screamed the people from the house to come out, but
despite the attempts, they didn't manage to extinguish the fire,
which soon spread also to the neighbouring houses.
The fire got its start apparently from a sparkle, which flew from
a chimney nearby and fell on a hay-stack on the attick of the
cow-house.
The bell of the cathedral on the other side of the river Aura
started to ring for alarm. After some hours, however, also the
tower with its bell fell down burning, as the increasing wind blew
burning particles over the river.
The fire in Turku was the biggest town fire in Scandinavia. It
destroyed about 2500 buildings, which means ¾ of those in Turku and
claimed 17 lives.

The grave number 3 belongs to Valde Hirvikanta, who was
the president of the Court of Appeals. He was also known as a
moderate speaker for the rights of the Finnish language and culture
in the Swedish dominated society of those times. This ideology
costed him his life: Bruno Forsström, a 24-year-old fanatic
supporter of the Swedish superiority shot Hirvikanta by his home
door. After that he shot himself.
Hirvikanta's funeral procession was honoured by enormous
crowds.

Point 4 is the grave of the runner Paavo Nurmi, who won 9
golden and 3 silver Olympic medals in the 20's. He also broke 25
world records.
Nurmi was an introvert, who didn't like publicity. Even the
memorial stone doesn't reveal by its looks that underneath lies a
great sports hero.
The last stop before the cache is a Pro patria memorial
for the soldiers who died in our wars. Its coordinates are:

There are alltogether 902 war heroes buried on the grave yard.
The memorial stands on the slope of a small hill, where you can see
a sad view to the long rows of soldiers' graves.
