Geocache Description:

Roadside Cache

A simple roadside stop at an Information Bay.

In 1627 Pieter Nuyts, on board the Gulden Zeepaard, discovered the southern coast of Australia. His voyage was a remarkable feat of navigaton. Not only was it one of the most important voyages undetaken by the Dutch during the whole of their century long exploration of the Australian continent, but it put the unknown southern southern coastline on the map and established a termination point which was to become a major point of reference for later expeditions.

175 years on Captain Mathew Flinders used information from Nuyts' charts in his epic voyage of discovery in 1802.

Ceduna is located 780 k's from Adelaide by road and with a population in excess of 2000, the town is the last major settlement before crossing the Nullarbor Plain from east to west.
Ceduna is in the District Council of Ceduna, the federal Division of Grey, and the state electoral district of Flinders. It is set on Murat Bay and the sandy coves, sheltered bays and offshore islands of the bay make it a popular base for a beach holiday. The name is a corruption of the local Aboriginal word Chedoona and is said to mean a place to sit down and rest.

The foreshore at Ceduna is lined with Norfolk Island pine trees. There is a jetty for walking, fishing and small boats. On the October long weekend each year they have an Oyster festival.

The port town/suburb of Thevenard lies 3 km to the west on Cape Thevenard.

For the Parrot Flock the most amazing thing about New Years Eve 2009 in Ceduna is that we managed to stay at the same hotel and had dinner in the same dining room as Auzee and Nibs without crossing paths. We both saw in the New decade sitting in hotel rooms about 100 metres apart.

If only we had known.
