Lake Julian Park is located off of Long Shoals Road in Skyland, North Carolina. The Park closes at 6 pm in the winter, 8 PM in the spring and 9 PM in the summer months.
The park is a local favorite for picnicking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, paddle boating, and walking. There is an enclosed Cuddle Bunnies area for small children to play, horseshoes for those interested and a lot of ducks and geese to feed.
No motor boats are allowed on the lake and swimming and wading is NOT permitted. There is a small fee for fishing and boating activities, you can even rent a paddle boat.
The cache was placed in the woods about 50 feet off the road. In the spring and summer the accuracy of the coordinates will be eroded by tree cover. The cache container is a tupperware shoebox type container with a blue lid. The original contents are common exchangeable items.
Note: On September 10, 2005, we returned for cache maintenance, and found that many trees had fallen, and there was a lot of "tree debris" about. There was heavy equipment around, and it was quite obvious that they were in the process of cleaning up. We were able to find the cache, although it was not where we originally hid it. We looked around and found an even better hiding spot than the original. It is now hidden IN the base of a living, standing, white oak tree. You will have to "twist" the cache container so it will fit through the opening in the tree base. The posted coords have been adjusted, and a picture has been provided.
Well, this cache is certainly developing a little "history." The area has changed drastically since we frist hid it, and today, July 17, 2008, when we returned to check on the last few logs, we found that the tree inside which the cache had been hiding, has been completely cut down! Dianne quickly found another suitable hidey hole, and we moved the cache into its new home. As you come around the one-way road, heading back toward the entrance where you came in, the lake will be behind you, and as the road curves to the left, the cache will be to your right, about 20' from the curve. Look for a geopile that once was a stump. The stump has completely rotted away, and there is not much left but a quite obvious geopile. Please rehide it completely when you leave so it is not visible to any casual walkers in the woods. (We love to watch a cache evolve over time.)
Please remember that animals have a much keener sense of smell than we humans. Please do not place food, candy, gum, or any other scented items such as soaps, candles or "wipes" in the cache, as animals often mistake these items as food, and will destroy the cache container trying to get to it. Also, please hide the cache container so it is not visible, so that other geocachers may enjoy the hunt. - Thanks
