Geocache Description:

Brandy Hole Copse is located to the North West of the cathedral city of Chichester. The name originates from the discovery of brandy casks in a smuggler’s cave nearby when part of the London to South Coast railway was constructed in 1881. This line is now a cycle and path way known as the Centurian Way. Designated a Local Nature Reserve in 2001, the copse has many tracks leading through it and includes three ponds.

The area is a Nature Reserve, so care must be taken to respect the habitat. Due to tree cover, GPS signal can be patchy, so the title and clue is as descriptive as possible. There is a signed parking area nearby, the co-ordinates are given below. Please park sensibly. There are also co-ordinates for a perfect view of the spire of Chichester Cathedral. The threat of invasion during World War Two resulted in the construction of various tank obstructions in the copse. Tank stops intended to block the path, buoys or cones to roll and hinder their progress and ‘dragons teeth’ to discourage a by-pass route.

Located near these defences, the cache is a medium plastic box containing a log book, pencil and a few swapsies.

Many thanks to Waysters for originally placing this cache.
