Geocache Description:

This small church sits in a quiet country lane in the village of Havenstreet, near Ryde. St Peter's was built in 1852 for £570 and was refurbished and renovated in 1994 for £21,666. It consists of the chancel, nave, south porch and turret. There is a holy water stoup at the entrance to the church inside the porch. The interior of the church is bright and airy, lit by the three stained glass lancet windows in the east wall and the recessed windows in the north and south walls. The wooden rood beam between the nave and chancel has three carved figures - the central one depicts The Crucifixion. A spiral staircase at the west end of the church rises to a small seating area in the balcony where the bell rope for a single bell hangs.
The churchyard is an open and tranquil area with some ancient tombstones among the more recent.
The church is possibly the smallest on the Isle of Wight and was designed by Thomas Hellyer who designed several churches, such as Holy Trinity in Dover Street, and schools, such as Oakfield School in Ryde. He also designed Ryde County Hospital in Swanmore Road, Ryde which has now, sadly, been demolished - part of the outer stone wall of the grounds where it once stood being the only remaining vestige of its existence.
