Geocache Description:

Crkva sv Martina

Church of St. Martin

is a building with characteristics of Romanesque architecture. The church was first
mentioned in 1387 and it witnessed the troubled history of this area, and it was completely
destroyed several times. In the late Middle Ages was the parish church in the now nonexistent
village of Prljani. During that time, Prljani was the center of the parish community
while Sukošan and Mokro appertained to the community as well. Thus, inhabitants of
these three villages were buried in and around St. Martin’s church. The center of the parish
was transferred to Sukošan during Turkish conquests.
Brotherhood of St. Martin’s restored the church 1753. In the past century there have
Been several renovation of the church (1912;1976 don Ivan Zorica).
During the Croatian War of Independence, rebelled serbs mined it and destroyed it on
December 17th 1991. After the war, using methods of facsimile reconstruction, the church
was completely restored.
The local people and the war veterans are convinced that St. Martin protected them during
The troublesome period and restaurated the church which was inaugurated on November
11th, 2005 on the Feast of St. Martin. The holy mass is celebrated in the church on this
Day every year.
