Geocache Description:

Superior needed an earth cache. Nature made this place very amazing.

This area has gone through many changes. From a volcano, to ocean, then becoming glaciers to what we see today. The point is a great place for rock hunting, but this area is a little over picked. Try further up the beach to find a better selection.

Sand deposits created this mammoth sand bar over 3000 years ago. This Entry wasn't charted until 1861, but by 1893 the first ore was shipped from the Mesabi Range. It made it's way through this Superior Entry, through the St. Lawrence Seaway, to destinations throughout the world.

The sandbar that formed here is called a river or harbor bar. The majority of the deposits came from the St. Louis River. Wave action and currents also contributed. Sediments were dropped when the river currents and off shore currents met. The bar extends 10 miles, and the Twin Ports are one of the safest harbors in the world because of nature's contributions.

Fun tidbit, the Twin Ports are at the fetch of Lake Superior, and it is roughly 300 miles long. A fetch is the longest straight distance the wind can travel without interruptions, That is why Superior, and Duluth are windy most of the time.
