The two bell towers, address stork nests and the main facade with a portico of marble curved pediment, dominate the city's landscape, when viewed from Sado. Of medieval origin, built in the sixteenth century to meet the faithful, the shrine earns current form by King John V, as Grand Master of the Order of Santiago, in the eighteenth century.
The Church of Santiago stands on a platform with a large imposing staircase. The exterior, sober, stripped and straight, in contrast to the richness of the interior, which features paintings, carvings and tile panels. The temple consists of a single nave of large proportions, typically eighteenth century, is flanked by arches of the chapels of inspiration Mannerist and Baroque.
The tiles consisting of two bands were assigned to Theotonius dos Santos, who worked there in the second decade of the eighteenth century. On the inside track, the panels tell the life of the Apostle James, the top, unfold the scenes of the life of the Virgin. The tiles remain on the sides of the chancel, showing St. James to be ordained Knight of Christ and the altar are also shown two images of the patron of this church. The bottom of the altar is all of it occupied by the painting of St. James on horseback, with the Moors vanquished at his feet, attributed to Peter of Alexandria and left another panel shows St. James pilgrim, walking with a staff and holding the holy book.
