St Illtyd's was a Parish Church during the medieval period, belonging to the Deanery of Kidwelly, in 1120 it was granted to the Benedictines of Sherborne Abbey, Dorset, by Roger of Salisbury, Lord of Kidwelly.
The church is a Grade I listed building, constructed of local rubble stone, the nave dates to the thirteenth century, the chapel to the fourteenth and the north aisle and tower to the sixteenth, On the tower's west face is a doorway with Tudor arch, it is approximately 70ft high, 25ft square at the base and 23ft square at the top.
The church was restored in 1856-1857, the chancel's two-light south wall windows may date to this time.
Between them is a memorial slab commemorating the dead of three nineteenth century shipwrecks on Cefn Sidan Sands, these were the French vessel La Jeune Emma in 1828, one of whose victims was Adeline Coquelin, 12 year old niece of Napoleon's consort Josephine, Brothers of Liverpool in 1833 and Pickering Dodge of the USA, in 1839.
Attatched to the outside of the South-West wall is a Ffald or Pound, formerly used to impound stray cattle, it is now one of the best preserved in Wales.
There are 5 Commonwealth burials from the1914-18 War, 22 burials of the 1939-45 War, 1 of which is an unidentified Airman from the Royal Air Force and 7 Polish Air Force War burials here.
