All Saints Church –Willian How Old is the Church? (Grade 2 Listed) Have a close look at the walls outside. You will see a mix of stones, flints and lumps of hard chalk (known as clunch ), all bound together with mortar. These are simple materials, all locally available, and suggest 12th century. In 1239 reference was made to the patron’s great-grandfather having been connect with Willian church ,and if we work three generations back we arrive at the 1160’s. Was it Built in One Go ? No way. All Saints ‘ has been evolving to its present state for 850 years, and changes are continually being made. It’s likely the chancel and nave were built first, though some think the lower part of the tower went up at the same time, because of the thickness of the walls. One of the earlier alterations was the insertion of new windows. The first ones would have been small and without glass, admitting wind and rain unless covered with material, giving priest and people a choice –be exposed or dimly lit!. The windows look to be of the 14th and 15th centuries, though one of those in the nave, made to resemble the others, dates only from 1866, and the stained glass saint from 1918 The Tower Large scale restoration took place on the 15th century, when it thought the tower was made taller. Its upper stages house the clock made in Hitchin in 1860 and the six bells dating from 1662 and 1760. At Willian the people of the parish were mostly farmworkers with low earnings, whereas the clergy from the 1600s to the early 1900s were nearly all men of independent means-and in receipt of a generous stipend too. The result is that the chancel was beautified , strengthened, enlarged ,tiled, re-roofed and generously decorated with memorials-many of the clergy themselves – throughout this period Many thanks to the Church Office (St Pauls Letchworth) for the basic details. rolleron
