Geocache Description:

Boundary Butte is the site of a former lookout.  In the Wenatchee National Forest, 4 miles south of Leavenworth, a 40' pole L-4 tower was built in 1937.  The structure was removed in 1967.  At an elevation of only 3168', the location still has impressive 360 views.  These include Wedge Mtn, Cashmere Mtn, Icicle Ridge, Leavenworth Valley, Entiat Mtns, Horse Lake Mtn, Tip Top, and Mission Peak.

A cache was placed hear in 2004 but three years ago, it was archived.  I felt this location deserved an active cache for the history, beauty and reward of coming up here.  It also qualifies for the Washington Forest Fire Lookout Challenge.  Once you reach the top, you will notice a rocky mound on the north end.  There is a benchmark at this spot.  From here, you are looking for an ammo box about 40 feet down the SW side of the hill.  Including the usual swag, pen, log book and a FTF prize. After you find the cache, continue across the top of the butte past the communication tower and you will see the remnants of the old lookout. The roads coming up are typical mountain roads, rutted and bumpy.  Recommend an SUV or pickup.  The last 1/4 mile is pretty steep.  If that's not your thing, there is ample parking below and you can walk up.

Getting there:  There are two ways up.  From highway 97, turn off at the sign for Ranch Creek Rd.  In a few hundred feet, you will see a small sign for the Mountain Home Rd.  This is the NF-7300.  Take a right and follow it to the top.  There is a spur road heading NE following the ridge out to Boudary Butte.  From Highway 2 in Leavenworth, turn onto East Leavenworth Rd.  In a couple hundred feet, turn left onto Mountain Home Rd. and follow it to the top.
