Vicolo del Piede collega via della Pelliccia a via della Paglia ed il suo toponimo è molto incerto. Varie infatti sono le interpretazioni: si va dalla classica insegna di un'osteria ad un piede di una statua murata in una casa, dalla forma del vicolo stesso fino all'espressione latina “ad pedes”, nel senso di “presso”, forse per la stretta relazione del vicolo con la vicina basilica di S.Maria in Trastevere. In questo vicolo infatti sorge una piccola chiesa, oggi sconsacrata, fondata agli inizi del XVII secolo per la Confraternita delle Anime del Purgatorio (fondata nel 1504 da Giovanni Colli) e sin d'allora oratorio di S.Maria in Trastevere. Nel 1675 l'oratorio fu concesso all'Arciconfraternita del Ss.Sacramento di S.Maria in Trastevere (sorta nel 1564 “per l'adorazione dell'Eucarestia e per l'accompagnamento del Viatico”) ed assunse il nome di S.Maria della Clemenza perché qui venne posta una copia dell'icona bizantina (appunto denominata Madonna della Clemenza) situata nella Cappella Altemps in S.Maria in Trastevere. Nel 1705 papa Clemente XI fece ristrutturare la chiesa, come riportava un'epigrafe posta dai confratelli all'interno della chiesa. Dopo un periodo di chiusura forzata successivo al 1870, i locali furono restaurati ed ampliati e nuovamente riaperti al culto nel 1888. Tuttavia dopo la Prima Guerra Mondiale, quando l'Arciconfraternita del Ss.Sacramento si estinse, l'oratorio cadde in disuso e, sconsacrato, fu adibito ad usi civili.
Andare a piedi per Trastevere è un grande piacere e i turisti vengono per questo da tutto il mondo. Noi vorremmo che Trastevere fosse interamente un'isola pedonale, a tutte le ore, SENZA CONSENTIRE l'accesso o il PARCHEGGIO agli autoveicoli o ai cicli e motocicli, se non ai residenti e per carico/scarico merci. Vicolo del Piede connects via della Pelliccia to via della Paglia and its toponym is very uncertain. In fact, there are various interpretations: they range from the classic sign of a tavern to the foot of a statue walled up in a house, from the shape of the alley itself to the Latin expression "ad pedes", in the sense of "near", perhaps for the close relationship of the alley with the nearby basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. In fact, in this alley there is a small church, now deconsecrated, founded at the beginning of the seventeenth century for the Confraternity of the Souls of Purgatory (founded in 1504 by Giovanni Colli) and since then the oratory of S. Maria in Trastevere. In 1675 the oratory was granted to the Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament of Santa Maria in Trastevere (built in 1564 "for the adoration of the Eucharist and for the accompaniment of the Viaticum") and assumed the name of Santa Maria della Clemenza because a copy of the Byzantine icon was placed here (precisely called Madonna della Clemenza) located in the Altemps Chapel in Santa Maria in Trastevere.
