ARRIFES, BOM DESPACHO

Arrifes é uma freguesia portuguesa do concelho de Ponta Delgada, com 25,27 km² de área, 6 941 habitantes (2001) e densidade populacional de 274,7 hab/km². É a maior freguesia das ilhas e de Portugal continental. A principal actividade é a agricultura, sendo esta freguesia, a maior bacia leiteira dos Açores. Nesta zona encontram-se ainda fábricas de lacticínios e derivados. (Wikipedia) A palavra Arrifes supõe-se que vem do árabe “Al Rife” que significa “à beira mar”. O padre Daniel Correia sugere que o nome deriva dos seus acessos difíceis, com rochas á vista. Este lugar “Bom Despacho”, recebe este nome por ter havido aqui uma ermida dedicada a Nª senhora do Bom Despacho, edificada em 1560. O Cardeal D. Humberto Medeiros, Arcebispo da Diocese de Boston (USA) foi a mais ilustre individualidade natural desta terra. Aqui nasceu em 1915, tendo falecido em Boston em 1983.

Milk factories are also located in Arrifes (Wikipedia) The Word ‘Arrifes’ is supposed to be derived from the arabic ‘Al Rife’, which means ‘near the sea’. Priest Daniel Correia has suggested that this name is derived from the difficult access routes, from which you can see the coast rocks. This place ‘Bom Despacho’ has been given this name due to the little chapel in honour of Our Lady of Bom Despacho, built in 1560. Cardinal D. Humberto Medeiros, archbishop of Boston (USA) is the most noteworthy person to have been brought up in this area. He was born in 1915 and died in Boston in 1983.
