Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in one of my favourite locations on Dartmoor.

This particular location became important in 1914 as a result of the amalgamation of the boroughs of Plymouth, Stonehouse and Devonport.
It was agreed during the Public enquiry that the water supply to the new city would probably be inadequate and that Burrator reservoir should be enlarged. After two exceptionally dry summers in the 1920's interrupted normal supply, Parliamentary sanction was obtained to raise the two dams by 3 mtrs. Work began in December 1923 and took 4 1/2 years to complete. The spillway arches had to be removed preparatory to raising the sill. Traffic from Dousland to Sheepstor village was taken over a temporary suspension bridge during this period.
All that remains of the suspension bridge today is the ground anchor points.
