Geocache Description:

This cache is placed on a foot path just of the main road, there is parking available.

The village of Pulford lies in the County of Cheshire. It is situated on the B5445 road, to the south west of Chester,  and on the border with Wales - in fact, the churchyard wall sits almost on the border! It is believed that the name of the village is derived from the Welsh words “Pwll” (marsh) and “Ffordd” (crossing). According to the 2001 Census, the population of the entire parish (which includes Poulton and Cuckoo’s Nest) was 395.

The parish has several notable buildings, including the Parish Church, and a castle mound.

Pulford Parish Church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church was rebuilt in 1884, to a design by the local Chester architect, John Douglas, the benefactor being Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, 1st Duke of Westminster. Mention of a church on the site, however, can be traced back to the 12th century, and the first Rector is mentioned in ancient records, from the reign of Richard I, as one “Hugo, pson’ ecct de Pulford”,

Pulford Castle Mound, the site of a small Norman motte-and-bailey defensive structure, lies just outside the western wall of the churchyard. The castle was built at a strategic location protecting a road at a river crossing. Although no firm date is recorded for its construction, it is believed to have been built around 1100. The castle is mentioned as having a garrison stationed in it, during the revolt of Owain Glyndwr in 1403.
