My kids and I placed this cache after I bought my son a handheld GPS for his birthday in 2003. A lot has changed since then. Today the trail is terrific - unrecognizable from its early days. When we first placed the cache, the trail was unfinished. None of the boardwalks existed; there was no drainage. It was a swampy mess that required boots and a willingness to trek through ankle-deep mud in the low spots. We were worried that no one would want to hike through all the muck and mosquitoes just to find it.
The cache was originally an ammo box, but after it was repeatedly stolen, it was eventually replaced with a plastic container. Even the description of the hiding spot is different now. It was originally a small hollowed tree trunk, but as the old trunk decayed, new offshoots sprouted and matured into young saplings that now guard the cache.
The Greensprings Trail is a walking/jogging trail. Bikes and motorized vehicles are not allowed. The trail has a main loop and several spurs. It connects the the Virginia Capital Trail, a 52-mile paved multipurpose trail which runs from the historic capital of Jamestown to the current capital of Richmond. There is a parking lot at the trail head. Cache is a plastic screw-top container suitable for small/medium items. Please camouflage when replacing the cache!
