Geocache Description:

This series, FWP or Famous Wisconsin People, will acknowledge the accomplishments of some well-known (and maybe not so well-known) individuals from our state.

Dan Jansen was born on June 17, 1965 and grew up in West Allis, Wi. He was inspired by his older sister, Jane, and began to speedskate, setting his first world record at the age of 16. He finished fourth in the 500 meter race in the 1984 Olympics.

Dan Jansen

Dan was a favorite in the 500 and 1,000 meters in the 1988 Olympics, but he was informed that his sister was dying of Leukemia. She, unfortunately, passed away right before Jansen’s 500 meter race. Jansen fell during his 500 meter and 1,000 meter race, but he was awarded the U.S. Olympic Spirit Award for his incredible efforts. Jansen competed in the ‘92 and ‘94 Olympics, winning a gold medal in ‘94, which he dedicated to his sister Jane, as he took a victory lap around the rink with his one year old daughter, also named Jane.

Jansen has been inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. Today he is a speed skating commentator for NBC.

You are searching for a small container placed in honor of Dan Jansen’s accomplishments.
