L'ange au Sourire
La cathédrale compte 2303 statues mais l'une d'entre elle est le symbole de la ville, vous l'aurez deviné facilement c'est "l'ange au sourire".
Un peu d'histoire:
Le 19 septembre 1914, l'ange est décapité par une poutre de l'échafaudage en flamme lors de l'incendie de la cathédrale, sa tête tombe 4 mètre plus bas et se brise en une vingtaine de morceaux. Le lendemain de l'incendie l'abbé Thinot ramasse les morceaux et les conserves précieusement dans les caves de l'archevêché de Reims. 1 an plus tard, l'architecte Max Sainsaulieu les découvrent.
Le sourire énigmatique de cet ange devient pendant la première guerre mondiale le symbole de la cathédrale martyre, puis rapidement le symbole de la ville de Reims. Il est depuis nommé "l'ange au sourire".
Après la guerre, un moulage sera réalisé à partir des fragments d'origine et la tête reconstituée. L'ange retrouve sa tête le 13 février 1926.
Comme l'abbé Pierre l'affirmait "un sourire coûte moins cher que l'électricité, mais donne autant de lumière". Donc venez illuminer votre journée en venant voir ce beau sourire.
