Geocache Description:

Åreknuten was the nickname (not translatable) used for describing the previous #1 dinner&dancing establishment for 'mature' people - Ekebergrestauranten.

The cache is close to Ekebergrestauranten, which was known as the restaurant with the best view of Oslo, Nordmarka and the sea. For many years the place was closed and worn down, but now it has been reopened with a huge popularity both for it's history, location and good food.

This cache is not only a tribute to 'Åreknuten', but also to the border stones surrounding the area. There are several nearby, and one is only some meters from the cache. They are marking the old city borderline from 1878 between Kristiania (Oslo) and Aker. All together it was 81 stones in a circle around the city; the first one was removed nearby Sjursøya when Mosseveien was buildt.
The last one was close to Frognerkilen. One of the border stones can be seen from the cache site.
In the log book, I have enclosed the URL which describes this boarder line and the stones in this area.

The cache is now included in - and inspired - the PPJ-theme: Old Oslo Borderstones

These geocaches are placed along the the Kristiania/Oslo border 1878-1948 (from east to west, like the stones are numbered):

The cache is accessible from several directions, with public transportation to both Kongsveien og Ekebergveien. I walked in from the small parking place near Ekeberg camping, a nice trip just north of Ekebergsletta. Norway Cup, the largest football cup for children, is being held here in late July. The area is a mix between park and open forest surrounding it, with an amazing view over Oslo.

The cache is a Lock-n-Lock plastic box 8x10x14 cm, containing a log book, pencil and the Geocache stash sheet. It can fit smaller items.
