Geocache Description:

I lead you to Tiānmén Shān next to Zhāngjiājiè. It is considered one of the most stunning mountains at all. That's why you will be only one conqueror among thousands each day. It plays an important role in Chinese mythology, too.
However, only little can be found about its formation.
For sure it is a water eroded karst cave, thus consisting of limestone. Originally, it was a real cave until the wall of it collapsed in 263 AD. After that, it was still called a cave, though.
The "formation of Tianmen Mountain originated from Yangshan Movement. Through Himalayan orogeny and wind and rain erosion, it became a platform-type mountain with steep cliffs around and towering peaks in various shapes...On the top of Tianmen Mountain, Tianmen Cave is the natural water-eroded cave with the highest elevation in the world. It runs south-north at a height of 131.5 meters, a width of 57 meters and a depth of 60 meters."*
"Tianmen Cave, the masterpiece of the nature, is embedded in the precipitous cliff like a shining mirror. It is also like an opening Heaven Gate absorbing and pouring clouds, fogs, thunders and lightning. It is full of celestial palaces mysteries. The exact origin of the cave is still lacking convincing scientific explanation."** 起源类似于附近的武陵源地区的柱林。
The origin is similar to the column forest in the nearby Wǔlíngyuán area. However, there are only isolated very impressive pinnacles reaching up high as you can see when you are moving towards or from the mountain by bus or cable car.
