The school house near this location was built sometime before or during the Civil War to accommodate the children of the land owners and workers who made their living on the island.
As Wye Island was home to many of my ancestors, I have family members who attended or taught at the one-room school. There is no longer any evidence of where the school once stood; but, if you close your eyes, you can imagine a time long gone by - children playing and running in the school yard, lazy summer days on the river and lots of snow in the winter.
Enjoy the walk on the trail and explore!
