2-Mile Mark Traditional Geocache

This cache is located at the 2-mile mark of the River Trail, between the Upper and Lower Falls. The hike is challenging, with exposed roots, staircases and lots of hills. Bring water and a snack (and bug spray in the spring). You can park at either the Upper or the Lower Falls. A Recreation Passport is required on your vehicle to enter the park. $11/year for Michigan-plated vehicles, $8 for non-Michigan plated vehicles.
The River Trail is marked every mile with a simple wooden sign. The 2-mile mark has a bench nearby and is a beautiful spot to take a rest. The Tahquamenon River begins about 80 miles upstream from where you are standing. The river actually drains a very large watershed, which is where all the water comes from. It empties into Whitefish Bay about 19 miles from where you are standing.
During the lumbering days, logs were sent downriver to the sawmill at the mouth of the Tahquameon. Men would ride the logs all the way to Whitefish Bay, which usually took about three weeks. These "log drives" took place during the spring flow, while the river was high and fast.
The Tahqua Trekker shuttle operates between the Upper and Lower Falls during the summer months, which is great for only hiking one way. If you plan to utilize the Trekker, make sure to check their schedule BEFORE you begin the hike!
