just off of the highlands trail at a scenic point. Newark Watershed permit required. Available at their office located on Echo lake rd. in West Milford
Upon reviewing old maps from the late 1800's, discovered that Dunker pond was originally called Bunker pond, and was much smaller than it is now. Beaver dams at the lower end led to its increased size. Dunker road, now partially submerged, once connected Paradise rd, to what is now Canistear rd. The original Paradise road turned north where it intersects with Stickels rd, and continued a number of miles untill intersected with what is now Henderson rd. The remains of an old bridge that onced crossed one of the feeder streams, can still be seen at the west end of the lake. Though the heavy rains, and floods of 2011 destroyed much of the beaver dam, the level of the lake is still above its original level. See arial photos posted with this cache for the comparison
