Black Wantage Traditional Geocache
smstext: Im afraid the sad day to archive the cache has come, i have replaced it a couple times so far this year and on a check today it had gone again. im not going to keep replacing it so im afraid its gone now.

A local cache that everyone can do.
Black Wantage describes Wantage in the 19th Century when the towns trade was reduced and poverty hit the town. Wantage had a reputation for lawlessness causing historians to label it 'Black Wantage'.
Wantage was a town which trade was in Leather and Tanning within the local brooks, this also brought the smells that go with it and the pollution.
The town is also mentioned in the doomsday book in 1086 and valued the town at £61 much earlier King Alfred the Great was born (849) and is probably most famous for burning the cakes.
The town has over the year had many transport links with canals and tramways as well as the recently discovered secret underground paths under the square of which many have been filled in for safety reasons. It is thought these paths were how goods were secretly moved around the town and has these secret paths passing from the Bear Hotel, the church and one running outside the now Cargo store and newsagents next door to the cache.
There is a local museum and a couple of coffee shops in the town as well as good access to the Ridgeway. Feel free to have a look around this town and keep a look out for various bits of history including the old tramway building down Mill Street, the Mill and of course the many caches within the local area (about 60 and counting).
