The Avakas Gorge is a magnificent piece of nature. After the wide entrance it really narrows down to only a couple of meters and approximate 50 meters high. But there is more.... Walking the gorge all the way brings you through a variety of landscapes and eventually to a valley with a magnificent view. A place that little tourists, or even Cypriots visit or even know of.
These are the reasons why the cache is placed quit a bit further in the gorge. This invites you to walk the whole gorge, climbing out on the right (east) side. All the way to the road at the top and follow that back to the parking place.
Keep in mind the following advices:
- Some trails are goat trails. If they go up, think twice to follow that. Mainly it is best to keep as low as possible.
- Take note of the pictures I took of the way out. Especially the one that is NOT THE WAY OUT. That is too steep. The cache holds the coordinates near the correct way out.
- Take enough water. Depending on the temperature you need at least 1 liter per person. In summer double or triple that. Temperature in the gorge can be acceptable because of some shades. But after climbing out there is no hiding for the sun !!
- All the way, but especially while climbing out, you can run into snakes... Doing this about 12 times I saw only one, but it was white (poisonous). Make sure not to be too quiet. Make some noise. Suprising a snake makes them defend theirselves...
- All the way in the gorge there is a danger of falling rocks. These are mostly caused by mountain goats walking around in the loose. So if you here them be especially cautious. In 12 times I had to dodge about 3 times..
