Marmitas de Gigante
Diz o povo que «água mole em pedra dura, tanto bate até que fura». Assim acontece com as marmitas de gigante, moldadas pelas águas do rio que nasce não muito longe daqui. O leito do rio surge, estreito e de paredes abruptas, ao fundo de um «V» fechado, encaixado no substrato rochoso. A erosão e o transporte de sedimentos acontecem de forma por vezes vertiginosa. As marmitas de gigante são fruto desta dinâmica fluvial, depressões mais ou menos arredondadas, escavadas pela água no granito.
People say "water dropping day by day wears the hardest rock away". This is just what appends with these giant potholes, formed by the water of the river passing by. The river bed is narrow, with stiff walls and the bottom of a "V" embedded in the bed rock. Erosion and sediment transport appends very quickly in the winter. The potholes are the result of this water activity that creates more or less rounded depressions in the granite.
As marmitas têm origem nas irregularidades dos leitos rochosos dos rios. Estas retêm, nas suas proximidades, alguns sedimentos. A acumulação de sedimentos vai provocar um movimento turbilhonar da água, cuja energia cinética propicia um movimento circular. Pouco a pouco, devido ao atrito, os sedimentos vão escavando depressões mais ou menos circulares no leito do rio, dentro das quais ficam aprisionados. Com o decorrer do tempo, as depressões aumentam e os seixos que estão no seu interior tendem a tornar-se esféricos.
The potholes come from the irregularities of the rocky riverbeds. These retain, in its vicinity, some sediment. The accumulation of sediments will cause a turbulent movement of water whose kinetic energy provides a circular motion. Gradually, due to friction, the sediments will dig more or less circular depressions in the riverbed, within which are trapped. With time, depressions increase and pebbles which are inside tend to become spherical.

Estas depressões encontram-se sempre voltadas para cima, podendo aparecer isoladas ou em grupo. Com o tempo, as depressões vão-se aprofundando e alargando cada vez mais, podendo, muitas vezes, coalescerem umas com as outras, formando canais progressivamente mais profundos canais de escoamento de águas.
These depressions are always facing up and may appear singly or in groups. In time, depressions will be deepening and widening increasingly. Some coalesce with each other, forming progressively deeper water flow channels.
As marmitas de gigante vão ficando maiores à medida que nos aproximamos dos locais com maior inclinação. Este facto deve-se ao um aumento na velocidade da água, que favorece uma maior capacidade erosiva e, como tal, maiores «marmitas».
