A quick cache on the Moray Coast Trail near Covesea Lighthouse. This cache can be done along with the other caches on the Moray Coast Trail, or as a quick cache, with parking available nearby. Standing across from the Halliman Skerries, a reef of rocks that are covered at high tide, is Covesea Skerries Lighthouse. The lighthouse was designed by Alan Stevenson, the uncle of author Robert Louis Stevenson, and was completed in 1846. After the loss of 16 ships during a storm in the Moray Firth in November 1826, many applications were made for lighthouses to be established at Tarbat Ness (GCHYM6)and Covesea Skerries to mark the wide entrance to the Firth and its confusing series of inlets. The lighthouse was worked by a rotated clockwork mechanism with gradually descending weights providing the energy. Keepers would need to climb the 7 storey building to raise the weights. Like most lighthouses, Covesea Skerries was automated in 1984, and is now monitored and controlled at the Northern Lighthouse Board's offices in Edinburgh. The original lens is on display locally at the Lossiemouth Fisheries and Community Museum. The lighthouse used to be available to let through The National Trust for Scotland, but this ended in January 2012 and the lighthouse is now a holiday cottage. Don't forget to visit the Covesea Lighthouse and Royal Navy and RAF Heritage Centre just down the track before the caravan park.
