GabGab's third cache has been hidden as part of the River Deep to Mountain High game.
The requirement for the River Deep to Mountain High game was to hide a large cache, so a large cache this is.
It is the usual 20 litre white bucket which has been painted to match its surroundings so it won't stand out.
The area where the cache is hidden is near the Mount Blackwood volcanic eruption point with a summit elevation of 736m. The cache is hidden around the 600m elevation and a couple of kilometres north of Mount Blackwood as the summit is on private property. It is similar in form to Mount Bullengarook although it lacks the extensive accumulation of scoria around the summit. The volcano erupted in a hilly area of Ordovician rocks and gave rise to lava flows extending to the south, probably filling a former valley. The flow has been dissected and twin lateral stream have developed - Myrniong Creek to the west and Korkuperrimul Creek to the east. The surface of the lava flow slopes steeply where it crosses the line of the Coimadai Fault.
As you leave the cache site and head south, down Mt Blackwood Road, the road provides an unequalled vantage point to view the Blackwood Ranges, Pentland Hills, and the terrain features of the catchment of the Werribee River. Provided of course it is not raining and the mist has not moved in.
The cache is not buried in the usual 20 litre bucket fashion. It is completely above the ground, so finding the cache should be easy, even though there are more than a few places where you could stash a 20 litre bucket in this area.
The easiest way to find the cache will be to stand on the road and when your GPSr points directly into the bush, walk straight down to it about 35m from the road.
The bush is not heavy and you should have good satellite coverage here. Small children may need to have their hands held, but larger children will have no problems walking down to the cache.
When the cache was placed it contained around $100.00 in brand new swaps and the usual log book and pen. The swaps are all contained in their own plastic bags which are then contained in larger plastics bags. This should hopefully keep any water at bay.
When you do your swapping, please put your swaps back into the double plastic bags and seal them properly. If you could also ensure the lid is clipped on properly, all the way around, it will also help keep the water out.
I hope you enjoy my third cache.
