História Spišskej Kapituly úzko súvisí s históriou Spišského hradu. Nachádza sa na východnom svahu Martinského kopca, v západnej casti Spišského Podhradia. Toto malé cirkevné sídlo pozostáva zo vzácnych objektov, ktoré slúžia na vykonávanie duchovných a administratívnych funkcií spišského biskupstva.
Dominantou Spišskej Kapituly je Katedrála sv. Martina - neskororománska trojlodová stavba z prvej polovice 13. storocia, viackrát upravovaná. V rokoch 1488-1499 bola k nej pristavená neskorogotická kaplnka Zápolských a v rokoch 1777 - 1778 bola katedrála barokovo upravená. Súcastou bohatého interiéru sú cenné gotické krídlové oltáry: oltár sv. Martina (1470 - 78), oltár Troch králov, oltár sv. Michala archanjela, oltár smrti Panny Márie a neogotický oltár Piety. Najvzácnejší je však neskorogotický oltár Korunovania Panny Márie z roku 1493, ktorý je umiestnený v kaplnke Zápolských. Velmi významnou pamiatkou je tiež kamenná plastika Biely lev (Leo albus) z románskeho obdobia. Táto plastika pochádza z 13. storocia a je jednou z mála dokladov románskej plastiky na Slovensku.
Oproti katedrále stojí pôvodne románsky, neskôr gotický a barokovo upravený biskupský palác z 15. storocia, ktorý vznikol prestavaním a rozšírením prepoštského paláca z 13. storocia.

Spišská Kapitula, is an exceptionally well-preserved ecclesiastical town on the outskirts of Spišské Podhradie, Slovakia, and overlooking Spiš Castle. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Spiš Castle and its Associated Cultural Monuments.
The town consists of the Cathedral of St. Martin, a former monastery, and a single street, all of mediaeval construction and enclosed by a wall. The lower gate gives a spectacular view of Spiš Castle, located on an opposite hill.
Spišská Kapitula became the main seat of the church administration in the region in the 12th century. In 1776 it became the seat of the Diocese of Spiš (Szepes). (The present bishop, the 13th, is Mgr. František Tondra).
The cathedral was built between the 13th and 15th centuries in the Romanesque and Gothic styles. It is one of the largest and most interesting Romanesque monuments in Slovakia. It contains many mediaeval carved altars and is the resting place of many lords of Spiš Castle; the 15th century carved marble tombstones of the Zapolsky family are of exceptional quality. A recently restored wall-painting from 1317 depicts the coronation of Charles Robert of Anjou as the King of Hungary; another painting in the cathedral is the source of the name of the unknown Kirchdorf Master.
Spišská Kapitula was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1995.
