The Sheepfold is noted on the OS map at grid reference SX645 808 but appears as nothing more noteworthy than a black rectangle. However, closer inspection of the location reveals an amazing structure and one not really to be expected in the wilds of Dartmoor. The Sheepfold consists of a ruined structure of some considerable size having walls over 7 feet high, and measuring approximately 160 feet by 110 feet. The construction of the Sheepfold is intricate and of a quality not normally seen in such a remote location. So what was the Sheepfold? It appears that the land was bought by John and Thomas Hullett at the end of the 18th century with the purpose of building a starch factory, which was built at the start of the next century. Not surprisingly the business failed and it then appears that it was taken over by a shepherd and turned into a sheepfold. Clearly this was not its original purpose, as the design is far too lavish and complicated and the walls too high, just for keeping sheep.
