Geocache Description:

A unique location off of D.W. Highway south that you may not be aware of....

This cache combines several things that I'm very interested in: Local history, Education, and Geocaching.

LOCAL HISTORY

The grounds the cache sits on have been known by many names. It has gone by the Old Dunstable Cemetery, Little's Station Cemetery, and officially as the Old South Cemetery. It is the oldest in Nashua with the earliest burial taking place in 1687 when this part of the city was part of Dunstable, Massachusetts. The most recent burial occurred in 1960.

EDUCATION

Suburban School #1 as it was known was one of eleven one-room suburban schools within the city ("suburban" because they were not in the downtown area). It was built out of brick in 1841 as a replacement for the original wooden Suburban School #1. The school was built at a cost of $629. The site was chosen because of its extraordinary price, only $75.

GEOCACHING

When I first started geocaching, Old School... was one of the first caches I found. It's setting was local, quiet, and beautiful right in the midst of one of the city's busiest areas. It was a perfect location! Shortly after finding the cache I emailed the CO about to talk about Old School... Almost a year had passed since finding it and the CO, remembering my interest, reached out to see if I was willing to adopt it. I think that one's a no-brainer! I consider it an honor to be the new caretaker and CO of Old School...

Please keep several things in mind when looking for this cache:

1.) Be considerate of the property. This is a cemetery first and foremost. Please be respectful. Some of these tombstones date back to the 17th century and have fallen on hard times. Please do not or let others play on or around them.

2.) When looking for the cache, please do not remove or shuffle stones away from the stone wall. In 1791, a law was passed protecting New England farmers and their stone walls. In New Hampshire, an updated version of the same law was passed in 2009 specifically protecting this state's stone walls.

3.) Please do not approach the cache from the Royal Crest Estates property - that is private property and you'd have to hop a fence which you should not do.

4.) No night caching. Although it appears some of the city's cemeteries allow after hours visitation, I do not recommend being in the cemetery after dusk.

5.) There is enough parking for one car at the entrance to the cemetery directly across the street from Walgreens. Please be considerate of the neighbors. Walgreens has several signs notating that their lot is for their shopping customers.

5.) Tradables: Please limit tradables to school related items (pens, pencils, erasers, etc.). Feel free to take something without leaving something, particularly if you or someone you know could use it for school. I'll do my best to add items whenever I can.

6.) Trackables: The cache is large enough to house many travel bugs and geocoins. I will use this cache to drop most Trackables I find elsewhere, feel free to do the same. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE remember to log any trackables taken from the cache in a timely manner and move them on to their next destination quickly.
