The church is believed to have been named after St Margaret of Antioch, one of the first Nuns and one of the earliest female martyrs. There is no exact date for the building of St Margaret's, but it is believed to have been built between the years 1180 and 1220. Little remains of the original structure. The church was extended in the 15th and 16th centuries and a substantial re-build was completed in 1853.

St Margaret’s Church is just one of a handful of Medieval Grade II* listed churches to gain consent for major re-ordering and extension. Two new gabled flint extensions have been created to provide a completely contemporary and striking elevation and a welcoming entrance into the church.
