Geocache Description:

Did you ever see a tombstone with a picture of a cemetery on it?

“INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST”

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of small, rural, historic cemeteries built by Hoosier Pioneers in central Indiana. You can map out a route and get a bunch of ‘em in one trip and at the same time learn a little about our history.

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #30
”Tombstones on the Tombstone”

Following the trail to this quest will take you to Citizens Cemetery, Paw Paw Township, Wabash County, north of Roann. The Cemetery is located on the South bank of the Eel River just below the Covered Bridge.

Part of the cemetery , as well as the Bridge, are immortalized on a lazer-engraved tombstone in Miami County’s Gilead Cemetery (ISQ #24--The Old Wooden Cross) . I have included a photo of that tombstone and a recent photo of the same site, above.

The Roann Covered Bridge (#14-85-13), the fourth covered bridge to be built on this site, is a double span Howe Truss, 312 feet in length, 16 feet wide and 18 feet high. It was built in 1872 by the Smith Bridge Co., and rebuilt in 1992 after a fire. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

This cemetery is the final resting place of a number of Civil War Vets as well as LOUIE F. SIGNS, SON OF JOHN F. AND MARGARET SIGNS, 1874-1904:

Lonely the house

And sad the home

Since My dear Louie has gone

But, Oh a brighter home than ours

In Heaven is now his own…

Government markers for Civil War vets include one for Lieut. C.S. WHITTAKER, Co. E. 13 IND INF and SAM'L GEORGE Co. A 89th IND INF.(BREAKING NEWS! The "th" on the "89" on George's stone is in SUPERSCRIPT!!!! I'm not lying about this! I've never seen that before on a government marker. Either this stone is a shameless FAKE or they had superscripts long before anybody thought so. Somebody Call Dan, quick!!!)

"The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns; But the path of the upright is a highway." -- PROVERBS 15:19

The cache container is small and well hidden. If you find a fallen U.S. flag, please stick it back in the ground, preferably next to a Vet’s Marker. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out.
