Geocache Description:

Secret Pathway Redux #2: Slanted Slabs Breather

The cache, a small camo’ed tablet pot, is hidden near the base of an impressive rock structure alongside the Secret Path as it heads upwards on the flanks of Paradise Kloof.

Ii is a good place to stop briefly to catch your breath, appreciate the rocks, and admire the view back down to the harbour and Simonsberg’s North Peak overlooking the town.

It is one of a mini-series of three caches hidden in recognition of the SLAIN’s original GC64AY8 Secret pathway secret society of geocaching which was hidden 30/9/15 and archived 18/1/17 after some 30 finds.

To reach the cache location: either . . .

a) for a full work-out: start at the bottom/start of the path @ S 34 11.322 E 18 25.453 and climb up past the location of GC7GJWQ Secret Pathway Redux #1: Path or Pass? , cross the road and continue up to the cache location, or

b) for a quick leg stretch: park at the limited space on the hairpin bend @ S 34 12.294 E 18 24.371 and (having first properly secured your car and contents) proceed 300m up the road to the place where the path meets & crosses the road @ S 34 12.124 E 18 24.238. The head across the road and up the path to the cache.

See here for the relevant waypoints.

The slanted rocks are believed to be of Table Mountain Sandstone and the tilting is evidence of the forces involved in the formation of the Cape Fold Belt of mountains by the collision of two continents in the late Palaeozoic age. See HeinG’s Earth Cache GC5AKFH Cape Fold Mountains Swartberg for a full explanation of how these mountains were formed.

Another interesting feature of the pathway walk is the remarkable regeneration of fynbos after the huge fire of 11-12 January 2017 which started in Ocean View and swept across and down Red Hill to the outskirts of Simon’s Town (see Gallery photos).
